How to Read Defenses in Madden 27
Count the safeties before the snap: one deep points to Cover 1 or Cover 3, two deep to Cover 2, Cover 4 or Cover 6, and a defender who follows your motion man is in man coverage. Then read the other side of the ball the same way, in five steps: name the formation, know what else comes from that look, check the play log, find the lean, and call what has held up. MutRadar puts those five reads on one board, live, from your squad's stream.
Start with the shell
With the ball, the read is the safeties. One deep safety in the middle of the field usually means Cover 1 or Cover 3; two deep means Cover 2, Cover 4 or Cover 6. Then look at the corners. Pressed up on the receiver points to man; off and square to the line points to zone. If you still cannot tell, motion a receiver across the formation. A defender who runs with him is in man. A defense that slides over as a unit is in zone.
That takes about four seconds, roughly what Madden gives you between the huddle and the snap. It is enough to pick a side of the field. It is not enough to remember what this opponent has done out of this look all half, and that is the part most squads lose.
On defense, read the board in five steps
When your squad is on defense the same discipline applies, only now the look belongs to their offense. Their formation and personnel are on your play-call screen before every snap. Read them in this order.
- Name the formation. Say it in the party before anything else: Gun Doubles, one back, one tight end, three wide. Everything that follows keys off it, and a formation nobody said out loud is a formation nobody defended.
- Know what else comes from the look. A formation is a menu. The first time an opponent shows one you have not seen a play from it, but their playbook only carries so many calls out of it, and most of them are known before the snap.
- Check the play log. After the snap, the play gets written down: the call, the result, the yards. One snap is not a tendency. Three snaps from the same look are, and the log is the only place they add up.
- Find the lean. Out of this formation, do they run, pass or RPO? On second down, what do they reach for? The lean tells you which half of their playbook to defend first, and which half you can leave to the base call.
- Call what has held up. If Cover 3 Sky has stopped them three times out of three from this look, that is the call. Not the coverage that beat somebody else on a stream last month: the one that is beating this opponent tonight.
None of this is new; good squads did it with a notepad and a loud voice. The problem is doing all five between plays, every play, while picking a coverage and setting the user.
How MutRadar handles it
The five steps are the board. MutRadar reads your squad's Twitch or YouTube broadcast, with nothing installed on the console, and when you are on defense it gives each step its own section.
ON SCREEN NOW shows the formation and personnel it just read off your play-call screen, Gun - Doubles, 1RB | 1TE | 3WR, with the number of snaps this opponent has shown from it. Under it, every play they have run from that look, with the count and the share. For a look they have not shown yet, Could also come from this look lists the plays that the Madden playbooks closest to their calls so far all carry out of it, and says how many of those books agree: not shown, in 5 of the 5 closest books.
After each snap the play is logged from Madden's own PREVIOUS PLAY card, which names both calls, and the yards are worked out from the change in down and distance on the scorebug. The LEANING chip updates with it: LEANING RUN 1 of 1, LEANING RPO 2 of 2. And YOUR CALLS THAT HAVE HELD UP VS THEM SO FAR ranks your defensive calls by stops, COVER 3 SKY, 3/3 stops, −3.7 yds, where a stop is a snap held under four yards, a turnover, or a drive that ended in a punt or on downs.
What the log says. SCA against LEG on 13 October, the game in the film: the board filed 16 LEG snaps. Four of them, in order. Gun - Deuce Close, MTN Buck Sweep into Cover 3 Sky, 1 yard. Gun - Spread Y-Flex, Curl Combo into Cover 3 Sky, sacked for −10. Gun - Doubles, Flood into 3 Buzz Match WK, sacked for −11. Gun - Empty Trips Speed, Drive Wheel into Cover 3 Sky, sacked for −12. LEG's two touchdowns are in the log too, both against Cover 9 Show 2; their yards are flagged low confidence, so they are left out.
A read the board cannot stand behind is left blank rather than guessed. The film below is a real game, SCA against LEG, with the board exactly as it was in the second and third quarters.
