How to Stop RPOs in Madden 27 MUT Squads
To stop RPOs in Madden 27 MUT Squads, stop answering the question the play asks: give the defender the quarterback is reading one job, keep a body inside the receiver they throw to, and let the front handle the handoff. After two or three RPO snaps most offenses show a lean, pull or give, and the lean is the side you commit to. MutRadar counts RPO snaps on their own and shows that lean on the board before the next snap.
What an RPO is asking you
A run-pass option is not a run and not a pass. It is a question. The quarterback reads one defender after the snap, usually a linebacker or a safety sitting between the box and the slot. The handoff is live and so is a quick throw: a slant, a glance, a bubble. If the defender you are reading crashes on the run, the ball comes out. If he sits, the back gets it.
That is why guessing does not work. Whichever answer you give, the play has a play for it. The defenses that get beaten by RPOs all game are the ones that keep trying to be right about which one is coming.
Three ways to take the read away
- Give the read defender one job. The player the quarterback is reading should never be the one who has to do both. If you are using him, decide before the snap: sit in the throwing lane and let the line take the handoff, or crash and let the safety behind you take the slant. Pick one and hold it. A user who flinches both ways is the RPO's favourite defender.
- Keep a body inside the receiver they throw to. The RPO throw is short and inside. A corner shaded inside, or an underneath zone sitting in that window, takes most of it away without anyone having to guess. The deep ball is not the threat on an RPO; the five-yard slant on a free release is.
- Fill the run with the front. If your line and one filling linebacker can stop the handoff on their own, the read defender is free to sit on the throw. Most of the time an RPO that keeps gaining is a run fit problem dressed up as a coverage problem.
Then play the lean
Here is what the notepad tells you after a quarter: most players are not reading anything. Some always pull. Some always hand off. A player who always pulls is throwing a slant on a known count, and a player who always hands off is running inside zone with extra window dressing. Both are easier to defend than the play they were supposed to be.
The trick is noticing, and in a 2v2 or 3v3 that means somebody saying it out loud: they have pulled it three times out of three from this look. Then the call writes itself.
How MutRadar handles it
MutRadar reads the play call off Madden's PREVIOUS PLAY card after every snap, and RPOs carry their own tag in Madden, so the board counts them separately. The ON DEFENSE strip reads something like 10 SNAPS, 6 PASS, 2 RUN, 2 RPO.
On the formation card the LEANING chip says which way they lean out of that look, LEANING RPO 1 of 1, and the plays they have run from it are listed with their counts: RPO PEEK SLANT, seen once. When they line up in that look again, ON SCREEN NOW flashes it before the snap with what came from it last time. YOUR CALLS THAT HAVE HELD UP VS THIS LOOK shows which defensive calls stopped it, with the stops and the average: COVER 3 SKY, 3/3 stops, −3.7 yds. A stop is a snap held under four yards, a turnover, or a punt or turnover on downs.
The play log keeps every snap with both calls and the result, so you can see where each RPO went, and the yards come from the scorebug, the down and distance before and after the play, so nobody in the party is typing anything in.
What the log says. Between 13 and 24 October the board filed 16 RPO snaps against our squad, from LEG, WHA, BIG, JMT, BTA, DIH, DOT and PAN. RPO Alert Bubble came six times and RPO Read Y Flat five; five other RPOs came once each. Fifteen had a yards read. Three were held under four yards: MTN RPO Read Stick into Cover 3 Sky for −2, and two Alert Bubbles for 2 each, into Cover 3 Sky and into Tampa 2. Six went for ten or more and two scored, a Read Y Flat for 78 against Cover 3 Sky and an Alert Bubble from the 3 against Overload Blitz. The five Read Y Flats went 78, 5, 7, 13 and 30. The six Alert Bubbles went 7, 3, 13, 4, 2 and 2.
What the board does not do: it does not predict the pull or the give on the next snap. It tells you what this opponent has done, how often, and what stopped it. The still below is the real card from SCA against LEG, third quarter.
