How to Stop the Run in Madden 27

Stopping the run in Madden 27 starts before the snap: match their personnel, count the box against their blockers, and make sure the gap they keep hitting has a body in it. After the snap, user a linebacker and fill downhill at the hole instead of chasing the back sideways. The run game is the easiest tendency in Madden to measure, so check what they have run from this look and which of your calls has already held it under four yards.

Before the snap

Most runs are stopped or lost before the ball moves. Three things to settle in the four seconds you get.

  • Match the personnel. Two tight ends and a fullback on the field is a run look, whatever the formation is called. Answer it with a base package, not the dime you were in for third and long.
  • Count the box. Count their blockers, the line plus any tight end or back lined up to block, and count your defenders inside the tackles. If they have one more blocker than you have bodies, a run is going to find the gap you did not fill. Walk a safety down, or accept that you are playing the pass.
  • Look at the back. An offset back tends to run to the side he is lined up on or straight through the middle. A back behind the quarterback in a pistol or an I-formation keeps both sides live. Either way, say which side you expect before the snap.

After the snap

User a linebacker. Not a lineman, who is already in his gap, and not a corner, who is too far away. From the linebacker you can read the handoff, step downhill at the hole and meet the back at the line, which is where runs in Madden die.

The mistake to avoid is running sideways with the play. A stretch or a toss wants you to chase it; the cutback is behind you the moment you do. Fill the hole, keep your shoulders square, and make the back come to you. If he bounces outside, that is what the edge defender and the corner are there for.

The run is a tendency you can measure

The run game is the part of an opponent's book that changes least. Most MUT squads carry two or three runs out of one or two formations and show them early, because a run is the safe call on first down. By the second quarter the log usually names the formation, the play and the gap. The only question is whether anyone in the party has been keeping it.

How MutRadar handles it

MutRadar keeps the log for you, from your squad's stream. Every snap is filed from Madden's PREVIOUS PLAY card with both calls, and each offensive play carries its run, pass or RPO type, so the board can show the run game on its own.

Before the snap, ON SCREEN NOW shows their formation and personnel as read off your play-call screen, and under it what they have run from that look: INSIDE ZONE, seen once; LEANING RUN 1 of 1. WHAT TO EXPECT, their offense by down lists their top two calls on each down with the snap count behind them, so a first-down run tendency reads as a first-down run tendency and not as a hunch. The yards on every play come from the scorebug, from the down and distance before and after the snap, which is also how the board knows a loss from a gain.

Then it grades you. YOUR CALLS THAT HAVE HELD UP ranks your defensive calls by stops and average yards, and DID IT WORK, your coverage vs their calls pairs each of your calls with the play it faced and stamps it: EDGE BLITZ 1 vs HB DIVE, −4.0 yds, WORKED. A stop is a snap held under four yards, a turnover, or a punt or turnover on downs.

What the log says. Between 13 and 24 October the board filed 108 run plays against our squad, going by the play name, 96 of them with a yards read it trusted. Inside Zone came 20 times, HB Dive 17 and HB Stretch 13. Of the 96, 53 were held under four yards, 27 went for no gain or a loss and 20 went for ten or more; the longest was a Wide Zone for 68. By our call: Cover 3 Sky faced 24 of them, 20 with a clean read, and held 10 under four. Tampa 2 faced ten and held eight under four, four of them for no gain or a loss. Saw O Blast was called five times against a run and all five went for no gain or a loss. Cover 2 Man faced four and held all four under four.

And when the fill lands, it is kept. A tackle for a loss of seven yards or more on a run is one of the big plays MutRadar clips on its own from the stream, like a goal-line stand or a fourth-down stop, video only, with both calls on the card. The still below is a real DID IT WORK section from one of our own games.

DID IT WORK, your coverage vs their calls: EDGE BLITZ 1 vs HB DIVE, minus 4 yards, worked; EDGE BLITZ 0 vs HB STRETCH, minus 2, worked.
DID IT WORK, your coverage vs their calls, from one of SCA's own games: Edge Blitz 1 against HB Dive, −4.0 yards, worked; Edge Blitz O against HB Stretch, −2.0 yards, worked.
