How to Stop PA TE Seam in Madden 27
PA TE Seam is a play-action shot where the tight end runs straight up the seam, behind the linebackers who bit on the fake and in front of a single deep safety. Cover 4 Quarters stops it because the safety on the tight end's side reads him and carries him vertical, so the seam is covered before the fake is finished. On 3rd and 5 in one of our MUT Squads games that turned into a 10-yard sack, which MutRadar logged with both calls and clipped on its own.
What PA TE Seam does
The quarterback fakes the handoff. The tight end, who looked like a blocker a second ago, releases straight up the field between the hashes. Against a single-high safety the linebackers have already stepped up on the fake, so the tight end is running behind them into the window between the hook defenders and the one deep safety, who has to choose between the seam and the post on the other side. It is a twenty-yard throw to a player nobody is looking at.
The play lives in plenty of Madden 27 playbooks under slightly different names, and it is popular in MUT Squads for the same reason it is popular on Sundays: it only needs one defender to be wrong.
Why Cover 4 Quarters holds it
Quarters puts four defenders deep, each responsible for a quarter of the field, and tells the two safeties to read the second receiver on their side. When that receiver, here the tight end, releases vertically, the safety takes him. The seam is bracketed before the fake is over, the corners carry the outside receivers, and the fake has pulled the linebackers forward into exactly the underneath zones where the check-down would go.
Now the quarterback's first read is gone and play action has cost him a long drop. He holds the ball. On third and five there is no time for a second read, and the rush gets home.
The adjustments
- Third and medium against a tight-end look is the spot. A tight end in line on 3rd and 4 to 6 is where PA TE Seam gets called, and Cover 4 Quarters is the base answer. You do not need to shade anyone for the seam itself; the safety's read handles it.
- User the hook defender, not a lineman. Quarters gives up the flat and the short middle. On third and five the check-down to the back is a first down, so your user belongs at the sticks, squeezing that throw, and the line can get home on its own.
- Keep calling it until they stop running it. The play only works against a defense that is still guessing. Once the seam is taken away twice, the look stops coming out, and that is a win you can see on the board.
How MutRadar handles it
This one happened. SCA against WHA, third quarter, 3rd and 5, WHA with the ball at their own 29. Chris's defense was in Cover 4 Quarters; they called PA TE Seam. The fake went nowhere, the seam was covered, the quarterback held it and the sack went for ten: 4th and 15.
MutRadar logged the snap from Madden's PREVIOUS PLAY card, which names both calls after every play, as PA TE SEAM vs COVER 4 QUARTERS, and worked out the −10 from the scorebug: 3RD & 5 at the 29 before, 4TH & 15 at the 39 after. A sack of seven yards or more is one of the big plays it clips on its own, so it cut the clip from the rolling buffer of Chris's stream a few seconds after the play. The card carries the label, Sack −10, the quarter and clock, 3RD 1:31, the down and distance, both calls and whose stream it came from, with Share, Download and Open. Clips are video only; nothing is recorded with audio. A sack stays on the squad's Highlights tab and its clip card; touchdowns, takeaways, go-ahead scores, fourth-down stops and goal-line stands also go to the MutRadar community Discord unless the squad turns that off.
What the log says. The row is in the plays table: SCA against WHA, third quarter, 1:31, 3rd and 5, formation read Gun - Trips X Nasty, PA TE Seam against Cover 4 Quarters, sack, −10, not flagged low confidence. The clip row beside it: sack, −10, 3rd & 5, 3rd 1:31, 19 seconds long. It is one of 15 sacks the board clipped for our squad between 13 and 24 October, from −7 to −12, −9.8 yards on average.
On the board, COVER 4 QUARTERS now sits in YOUR CALLS THAT HAVE HELD UP with its stop, and the next time WHA shows a tight-end look on third and medium, ON SCREEN NOW says so before the snap. The film below is that play from the defense's own screen, then Madden's own card, then the clip.
